CCS National Roadmap

The roadmap for deploying CCS in Hungary sketches the steps that must be taken in order to move Hungary from its current status on CCS to a future where these technologies can significantly contribute to national decarbonization.
Chapter 1 presents the global context for CCS as a contributor to decarbonization.
In Chapter 2, the report homes in on CCS in the Hungarian context, identifying challenges and opportunities, among which a significant presence of heavy industry emitters (such as oil and gas producers and fertilizers), potential CO2 storage sites in hydrocarbon reservoirs and experience with Enhanced Oil Recovery. The role of CCS in decarbonization is acknowledge by stakeholders as well as the national government, in its National Clean Development Strategy and its National Hydrogen Strategy.
Chapter 3 outlines the concrete actions which should be part of a CCS roadmap for Hungary – the most important include refining the regulatory framework and clarifying responsibilities within government, facilitating an industry-wide CCS platform, conducting a geological survey of potential storage sites and, in the longer-term, launching small-scale pilot projects at depleted hydrocarbon reservoir sites.
This roadmap was created as part of the Building momentum for the long-term CCS deployment in the CEE region project (CCS4CEE), which aims to renew the discussion on the long-term deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies in Central Eastern Europe (CEE), leading to new policy developments and joint projects in this area.
