BUILDING MOMENTUM FOR THE LONG-TERM CCS DEPLOYMENT IN THE CEE REGION – CCS National Roadmap – Latvia

Authors: Valts Ulmanis

In the framework of the CCS4CEE project, the Latvian national CCS roadmap has been prepared. During the development of this roadmap, individual consultations with the key stakeholders were held, and a joint workshop to review the final draft of the CCS roadmap was organized.

Overall, the roadmap consists of the four chapters:

  1. Firstly, the role of CCS in decarbonization pathways is described to set out the overall context of this topic;
  2. The second chapter outlines the main opportunities and barriers to the deployment of CCS/CCU in Latvia based on the findings from the national report. It also describes the recent developments in the field of CCS/CCU in Latvia;
  3. In the third chapter, the developed roadmap is described. It provides an overview of various actions with the aim of creating an enabling environment to deploy CCS projects. Proposed actions are grouped into the four main categories;
  4. Finally, the next and immediate steps are highlighted for the further advancement of CCS in Latvia.

One of the main emphases for the advancement of this sector should be changes and further development of the regulatory framework. Also, important actions would be the nomination of a responsible person from the ministry and the creation of a stakeholder working group or platform on this issue. Stakeholders can also implement a number of continuous activities in the future.
