BUILDING MOMENTUM FOR THE LONG-TERM CCS DEPLOYMENT IN THE CEE REGION – CCS National Roadmap – Lithuania

Authors: Ervinas Škikūnas, Povilas Jučinskas

The Lithuanian national CCS roadmap was prepared in the framework of the CCS4CEE project. As part of roadmap development, the team consulted with key stakeholders and organized a joint workshop to review the final draft of the CCS roadmap.

The roadmap details the following:

  1. Outline of the role CCS has in decarbonization pathways;
  2. Summary of opportunities and barriers to the deployment of CCS/CCU in Lithuania from the national report and recent CCS/CCU developments in the country;
  3. List of proposed actions to create a favourable environment to test and deploy CCS;
  4. Description of potential immediate steps.

A potential immediate no-regret action could be instituting a knowledge platform that would help interested shareholders and the general public access CCS-related information and insights and serve as a place where stakeholders could cooperate and define objectives for the use of CCS. Collaboration is also very important on an international scale.

A full menu of options could be unlocked if the prohibition of storage would be relaxed to at least first allow experiments to evaluate the feasibility and safety of CO2 storage nationally. If proved safe, storage could be used for industrial applications.
