One of the potential actions to help economies achieve their long-term deep decarbonisation goals is the implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. However, achieving this on a large scale requires a stable and enabling regulatory environment and coordinated action in Europe. At the moment, the topic of CCS is not present in the mainstream debate on climate policy in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries and stakeholders are cautious towards committing to CCS technologies. Low awareness of the CCS importance for long-term decarbonisation, as well as economic risks of falling behind, may in the forthcoming years lead to the missed chances regarding both national development and regional cooperation.
In order to address these challenges, WiseEuropa together with Bellona Europa, CIVITTA Latvija, Institute for European Integration and Energy Policy Group, with support of Europeum, is implementing the project “Building momentum for the long-term CCS deployment in the CEE region” supported by the EEA and Norway Grants Fund for Regional Cooperation. The purpose of this project is to renew the discussion on CCS technologies, leading to the new policy developments and joint projects in this area.
As part of the project, partners and national experts have developed analyses assessing the current state, past experiences and potential of CCS in Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine and the CEE region as a whole, together with an overview of the current state of CCS technologies and the EU policy framework. As a key stakeholder in the implementation of CCS, we would like to invite you to participate in the first annual conference of the project, during which we will present the results of the analyses. The presented reports will serve as a baseline by providing background information and the foundational knowledge required for the development of roadmaps for national action and regional cooperation for CCS deployment in the CEE region
