National seminar on CCS deployment in Slovakia – summary

On June 23rd, the CCS National Seminar (original title: “Národný seminár na tému zachytávania a ukladania CO2 do geologických štruktúr (CCS)”) took place. This online event aimed at presenting the final CCS Roadmap discussing potential key steps for CCS deployment in Slovakia and the region of CEE. At the same time, it summarized current Slovak experience; support of ministries; knowledge and cooperation of private sector, academia and ministries; what is being prepared for the upcoming months; how to achieve any significant milestones. The list of speakers included: Julia Kotulova (Slovak Academy of Sciences), Michal Jankulár (State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr), David Kállay (SLOVNAFT), Jan Mykhalchyk Hradický (Ministry of Finance/Value for Money).

Julia Kotulova summarized her part: “Already in the 1950s, there had been plans to utilize CO2 and create a form of CCUS value chain in Slovakia. CO2 was thought to be used for EOR in the Vienna Basin. The project included a plan to build a CO2 transport pipeline that would be 70km long. So today we do not start on a green field.”
