Matevž Pušnik is an expert in reference energy systems planning and modelling. His research includes the development of reference energy system models, namely models of individual energy sectors and technologies based on modern mathematical approaches. His primary focus is comprehensive analysis and modelling of the industrial sector (including CCS/CCU) in support of decision making in climate and energy and environment related policies. He is involved in international research and application projects mainly related to energy efficiency, RES utilization and GHG mitigation in industrial sector. He was also involved in preparation and revision of National Energy and Climate plan (NECP) and Long-Term Climate Strategy until 2050 (LTS).

He cooperates with industry, especially energy intensive industries, exploring possibilities of the use of advanced energy management systems and various decarbonisation technologies. He is also a regular reviewer of scientific papers in international scientific journals and guest editor for the field of energy modelling in industry and has published several scientific papers in international and domestic journals.
